5 out of 5 stars.
If you refuse to believe me, I will no longer consider you my son...
Daniel thought that his parents were safely in Sweden, enjoying a peaceful retirement on their remote farm. With a single phone call, everything changes. "Your mother... she's not well," his father tells him. "She's been imagining things - terrible, terrible things."
In fact, his mother has been committed to a mental hospital.
Then she calls Daniel: "Everything that man has told you is a lie. I'm not mad... I need the police..."
Whom should he believe, whom should he trust? Daniel becomes his mother's unwilling judge and jury as she presents him with an urgent tale of secrets, lies, and a crime and conspiracy that implicates his own father. It is for him to examine the evidence and decide for himself: who is telling the truth?
If you have not read this book then I strongly urge you to go and read it. I absolutely loved this book more than words can explain. I'd seen books written by Tom Rob Smith before but I hadn't actually read any of them but when I picked this one up it just seemed like the perfect book to read. I will also be completely honest and admit that one of the reasons I picked up the book was because of the cover and style of the book.
When I started reading this book I really had to struggle to stop myself from flipping forward to see what was happening. It was so easy to get into and the story pretty much kicked off from the start. I was hooked on the book within the first few pages and there aren't many books that are able to do that. The more the read the more I wanted to carry on. Tilde, Daniel's mother, arrived in London and went to Daniel's flat to give her account of the story and what has been happening in Sweden. The way her story flowed and the more details she gave the harder it got to put the book down. During the time his mother spends telling him about her life in Sweden, Daniel has the biggest decision to make of his life. Is his mother telling the truth? Or is she mentally insane? He's on a time limit, his father is on the way the London and he needs to decide what to do before he gets there. Daniel takes his own trip to Sweden to find out the truth in his own way. What he discovers there is shocking. The whole story is gripping. It's the perfect thriller but without all the gore. I highly recommend this book, you will without a doubt love this book as much as I did. The end of the book doesn't disappoint either.
